This has certainly been a whirlwind month for former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. Arriving in Cannes for the 2008 film festival, buzz was in the air leading up to the screening his self-titled documentary 'Tyson', directed by Academy Award nominated writer and director James Toback.
While the former champion humbly tabled his expectations for the picture, wondering aloud if he had offered more information than the public needed to hear, the reaction erased any doubts he had. The film was received with open arms and Mike received a prolonged standing ovation at the festival from fans and critics alike. Tyson, who was visibly moved by all the adulation, stated 'I've never experienced anything like this in my whole career. It's kind of intimidating. I had no idea this thing was going to ever make it to such a grand scale. I feel totally overwhelmed.'
However, it was the official Jury at the 61st Cannes Film Festival who were truly overwhelmed by the power of the documentary and selected the film as the Knockout of Un Certain Regard, one of the more prestigious awards among those films not in the festival competition.
Toback, who also directed 'The Pick-up Artist' and 'Two Girls and a Guy,' said that the documentary will be released in theaters this fall.
